Sold as plug plants and in 9cm and 1L pots.

Please note: all of our 1L+ bananas have now been cut back for winter. Plants in 9cm pots have recently been potted up from plug plants, so leave to fully root before potting on or planting out.

Please read the separate description for each plant, as they have different over-wintering requirements.

Musa basjoo is a cold hardy banana native to China and Japan. Eventual height 4-5m. May produce fruit after several years, which are inedible. A suckering banana producing multiple offsets from around the base of the plant each year, forming a large clump.

Care requirements: Grow in full sun or partial shade. Its large, delicate, paddle shaped leaves are prone to being shredded by strong winds, so plant in a sheltered location. Keep soil well-watered during the growing season, and regularly feed with a high nitrogen feed. Depending on location or particularly cold winters, you may wish to protect stems to retain their height. We recommend bringing Musa basjoo in for their first winter (if buying as plugs or in 9cm pots) and planting out in their second year when they will be mature enough to cope with winter.

Hardy. Stems hardy to around -5c, depending on size.

Ensete ventricosum Maurelii or Red Abyssinian or Ethopian black banana. A vigorous grower, producing huge paddle-shaped leaves, edged and backed with a deep red / purple colour, which can reach 2-3m in length.

Care requirements: Can be grown in full sun or partial shade. Plant out once risk of frost has passed. Keep soil moist during the growing season and feed regularly with a high nitrogen feed.

Tender - keep frost free
