A cold hardy banana native to China and Japan. Eventual height 4-5m. May produce fruit after several years, which are inedible. A suckering banana producing multiple offsets from around the base of the plant each year, forming a large clump.
Basjoo typically flower at around 4 years. The pseudostem will die, but will produce several offsets.
Care requirements: Grow in full sun or partial shade. Its large, delicate, paddle shaped leaves are prone to being shredded by strong winds, so plant in a sheltered location. Keep soil well-watered during the growing season, and regularly feed with a high nitrogen feed. Depending on location or particularly cold winters, you may wish to protect pseudostems to retain their height.
Root hardy, with stems hardy to between -2c and -5c
