Australian/Tasmanian/Soft Tree Fern. A stunning and versatile tree fern in that it can be planted in a range of conditions. In their natural environment however, tree ferns grow as an understorey plant, in dappled shade, in areas with high rainfall. The knuckles, as they are termed, lie dormant in the crown of the tree fern, then in spring the croziers (emerging fronds) will start to unfurl, eventually producing huge fronds up to 3 metres in length.
Care requirements: Can be planted in full sun through to full shade. Be mindful that if grown in full sun it will require far more watering, and as it is more open to the elements, more protection during the winter. On planting your tree fern bury it 2" into the ground and if you have a large specimen, stake for the first year or two while it establishes its roots. Alternatively, you can plant it lower into the ground, but as a very slow-growing tree fern, be mindful that you will lose years of growth that you have paid for!
Keep the trunk moist during spring through to the end of autumn. During the summer they benefit from soaking both the trunk, which are the fern's aerial roots, and the crown. During winter it is advisable to protect the crown either by adding a ball of fleece or stuffing with straw. The top 2ft of trunk can also be fleeced during freezing temperatures as additional protection. We also sell tree fern feed.
Hardy to -5c, lower if protected correctly
